Lesson Plan: The Watsons Go to Birmingham — 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis

Abstract

This lesson integrates social studies, reading, language arts, and technology. Students are involved in reading historical fiction, examining authentic documents, and completing a WebQuest activity. Ten strategies for reading the Notable Book are explained in detail in the Appendix.

Ursula Thomas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of West Georgia. She teaches reading and language arts courses and is involved with creating and refining the Infant and Toddler program at UWG.

Janet Strickland is an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of West Georgia. Dr. Strickland teaches social studies methods courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
